At the beginning of this month I purchased a happiness journal. I had looked at this journal for months and pondered whether or not to buy it. Finally, on the day of my acceptance to a new school, I decided to mark this occasion by buying it and marking it as a token of my "new life" in which I want to embrace my happiness. This book is divided up into 12 sections (one to complete each month for a year) and the first one which I am just about drawing to the end of is gratitude.
I started off by writing three main things that I am grateful for and why:
My family, for always supporting me and giving me such a good upbringing.
My education, because I have been blessed to be able to have an amazing education which will set me up for many things in the future.
My body, for managing with all of the things going on and being able to tell me when enough is enough.
That was only the beginning of the section of gratitude and I was already feeling so grateful for everything that is in my life, resulting in giving me the feeling of happiness.
I went on do do exercises such as the reverse bucket list, showing my gratitude to others and writing three things that I am grateful for each day.
As the end of the month is coming, I have learnt a lot about how simple gratitude everyday can bring happiness not just to me but to the others around me. A simple thank-you can go a long way and can potentially make someones day. When was the last time you went out of your way to say thank-you? I challenge you to make a conscious effort to show at least one person a form of gratitude everyday and then after a week reflect. How did it make you feel? How did those few seconds that you took to be grateful affect you and the other person/people?
